Biography
My name is Nancy Sunitsch and I am a mixed-media artist and teacher. I paint, draw, photograph, print and create most any type of art.
I completed a general art bachelor’s degree at University of Washington before I earned my teaching certificate. My young adult years were spent teaching elementary-aged students, raising three children, and then teaching secondary art.
I spent thirty years taking care of others but feel like my true art career is brand new.
I have lived in Federal Way, Washington for 31 years and have just marked the first-year milestone of retirement. Now that I have the time, my new goals have been to improve my skills, find specific types of art that I love, and to find my artistic voice.
When I’m not in my studio, I garden, swim, run my dogs, volunteer as a native plant steward, and love being a new grandma. I plan on continuing my daily art practice and see myself continuing to teach and embrace my inner artist.

Describing my work
My paintings are a reflection of the Pacific Northwest— with ever-shifting light, rich textures, and the quiet, untamed beauty of its landscapes. I seek to capture the essence of nature in a way that is both immersive and expressive.
Beyond landscapes, I also paint the things I love—dogs, family members, birds, and dragonflies—subjects that carry deep personal meaning and connection.
Through layers of color and texture, I explore the relationship between earth and atmosphere. My work is not about strict representation but rather about the feeling of being surrounded by the wild—the way the light filters through cedar branches, the rhythm of water against stone, or the weight of the air just before a storm.
Ultimately, my paintings are an invitation—to pause, to breathe, and to connect with the natural world and the personal moments that bring us joy.
